| 1. Satz: Bekanntes | 3 Äpfel ≙ 1,50 € |
| 2. Satz: auf 1 rechnen (beide Seiten ÷ 3) | 1 Apfel ≙ 0,50 € |
| 3. Satz: auf das Gesuchte (beide Seiten × 7) | 7 Äpfel ≙ 3,50 € |
Formel: x = b ÷ a × c
Antiproportional – je mehr, desto weniger
| 1. Satz: Bekanntes | 4 Maler ≙ 6 Tage |
| 2. Satz: auf 1 rechnen (links ÷ 4, rechts × 4) | 1 Maler ≙ 24 Tage |
| 3. Satz: auf das Gesuchte (links × 3, rechts ÷ 3) | 3 Maler ≙ 8 Tage |
Formel: x = b × a ÷ c. Typisch für Arbeitskräfte und Dauer, Geschwindigkeit und Fahrzeit oder Anzahl Personen und Vorrat.
How the rule of three works
You go from the known amount to one unit and from there to the amount you're looking for – three steps.
Direct proportion – the more, the more
| Step 1: what you know | 3 apples ≙ €1.50 |
| Step 2: down to 1 (both sides ÷ 3) | 1 apple ≙ €0.50 |
| Step 3: up to the target (both sides × 7) | 7 apples ≙ €3.50 |
Formula: x = b ÷ a × c
Inverse proportion – the more, the less
| Step 1: what you know | 4 painters ≙ 6 days |
| Step 2: down to 1 (left ÷ 4, right × 4) | 1 painter ≙ 24 days |
| Step 3: up to the target (left × 3, right ÷ 3) | 3 painters ≙ 8 days |
Formula: x = b × a ÷ c. Typical for workers and duration, speed and travel time, or people and supplies.
Beispiel: 200 € ≙ 100 %.
FAQ
Direct or inverse proportion – how do I tell?
Ask yourself: if the left quantity doubles, does the right one double too? Then it's direct (more apples – higher price). If it halves, it's inverse (more workers – fewer days).
How do I do percentages with the rule of three?
Set the base value to 100 %. Example: €200 ≙ 100 %. What percentage is €30? 1 % ≙ €2, so €30 = 30 ÷ 2 = 15 %. Try the “percent” example.
What is the compound rule of three?
When several quantities affect the result at once, e.g. number of workers and hours per day. You do several simple steps in a row and change one quantity at a time: 5 workers at 8 hours a day need 12 days – 4 workers at 6 hours need 12 × 5/4 × 8/6 = 20 days.
