Markdown to PDF
Save a ChatGPT answer as PDF – with tables and lists
A study plan, a travel itinerary, a summary with a table: the answer from ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini should become a proper PDF to keep, print or share. Screenshots, printing the chat page or pasting into Word often go wrong. The clean way goes through Markdown.

AI answer to PDFWhy screenshots and printing the chat are annoying
| Method | Problem |
|---|---|
| Screenshot | Text can't be selected or searched; long answers need many images |
| Printing the chat page | Sidebar, input box and buttons get printed; wide tables and code are cut off |
| Pasting into Word | Formatting comes through sometimes; tables and code need fixing |
| Copying as plain text | Asterisks and hashes (**, ##) instead of bold and headings |
The trick: AI answers are Markdown
The asterisks and hashes from the last row aren't a bug: language models write their answers in Markdown, a simple text formatting. ## Heading becomes a heading, **bold** bold, | A | B | a table. The chat displays it nicely – and with many assistants the copy button under the answer gives you exactly that Markdown text.
A Markdown converter turns it back into a formatted page – this time as a real PDF.
To PDF in four steps
- Copy the answer. Use the copy button under the answer (usually an icon with two sheets), don't select with the mouse.
- Paste. In Markdown to PDF, remove the sample with “Clear” and paste the answer on the left. The preview appears on the right as a paper page.
- Pick a layout. Font (book, modern, typewriter), size, paper and margins. For long answers, “Table of contents at the start” helps.
- Save as PDF. The button opens the print dialog. Choose “Save as PDF” as destination and turn off headers and footers. The first heading is suggested as file name.
Your text stays with you. Conversion happens in your browser. The draft is only kept locally so nothing is lost if you close the tab.
Paste the answer, check the preview, save as PDF – with real text, tables and clickable links.
Polish: title, font, page breaks
- Add a title: a line
# Statistics study planat the top turns the answer into a document with a heading – and a sensible file name. - Trim the intro: just delete lines like “Sure! Here's your plan:” in the editor.
- Page break:
\newpageon its own line starts a new page. Or turn on “Start each main heading on a new page”. - Several answers pasted one after another, each with its own
#heading – and the handout is ready. - Line breaks: if a poem or an address looks squashed, turn on “Keep single line breaks”.
What doesn't work
- Math formulas in LaTeX notation (
$x^2$) show up as code, not as typeset formulas. - Images generated by the AI aren't included in the copied text; images with a web address are shown.
- Diagrams (e.g. Mermaid code blocks) are shown as code.
For everything else – headings, lists, checklists, tables, quotes and code blocks – going through Markdown gives the cleanest result.

Frequently asked questions
How do I save a ChatGPT answer as PDF?
Copy the answer with the copy button, paste it into Markdown to PDF and save it via “Save as PDF” in the print dialog.
Does it work with Claude, Gemini or Copilot?
Yes. All common assistants format their answers in Markdown. The key is using the copy button.
Are tables kept?
Yes. Markdown tables are rendered as real tables with borders.
Is the text in the PDF selectable?
Yes. The PDF contains real text and links stay clickable.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser; the draft is only stored locally.
Why do I see asterisks and hashes in the text?
